Yanks stay alive on Giambi's clutch hits

Yankees first basemen Jason Giambi was not in the starting lineups and sat out 6 innings then ended up being the Yanks big hitter today. We saw a great pitchers duel as Mike Mussina went for his 17th win again but was credited with a no decision. Jon Lester was also great he pitched 6.2 of 5 hit, 1 run baseball as he fanned 8 bombers the only blemish he gave up was a double to Cody Ransom then was booted out for Hideki Okajima who gave up a 2 run pinch hit blast to the Giambino. He also added a walk off RBI single off Papelbon in the ninth to win the game the Big G is today's hero!

Mike Mussina was on a roll entering the fifth only allowing 1 hit then he fell behind the Sox again. Jed Lowrie who has been excellant taking over Julio Lugo who is on the DL got a base hit then was advanced to scoring posistiopn at second when Mussina drilled Alex Cora on a 1-2 pitch. Jason Varitek who is having a off year deleviered a RBI single to right to bring in the game's first run of the day. Sox added another when a double play ball turned into an RBI force out of Jacoby ellsbury. Robby Cano flipped the ball to Jeter that is why they did not get the double play.

Jon Lester came in 2-0 against the Yanks this season was silencing the Yankee offense again through six innings. After he quickly got Cano and Matsui on strikeouts Cody Ransom ripped a double into left field corner to knock Lester from the game as Francona brought in Okajima. Jason Giambi pinched hit for Molina and it payed off on a 0-1 fastball it was crushed to deep center to tie the game at two.

With the Yanks season hanging on this game Giradi played mix and match with the Sox he brought in Brian Bruney to face the hot hitting Dustin Pedroia and he flied out then the left handed Demaso Marte came in to tangle with Ortiz who bounced uot for the second out. Then Giradi opted to bring in closer Mariano Rivera and he got Youkilis out and pitched the ninth quite easily despite a Derek Jeter error that allowed Bay to reach. With Bay in scoring position at second base and Alex Cora up Mariano jammed him and Cora bounced out to move the game into the bottom of ninth where the Yanks had a chance to win.

Justin Masterson who came in for Okajima in the eighth started the ninth inning and found his self in lots of trouble. On a 3-2 pitch Xavier Nady grounded a pitch up the middle to start off the inning he was pinced run by Brett Gardner. Robinson Cano was retired on a lineout to Lowrie at third for the first out. Brett Gardner steal of second forced the Sox to walk Matsui intentionally as the Yanks had first and second with one out. Pudge Rodriguez came into catch for Molina and worked his way on with a walk to load the bases. Closer Jonathan Papelbon came on the hill on an 0-2 pitch Jason Giambi lined it over Cora's head and into center to score Gardner for the winning run as Yanks avoid the sweep and take game three 3-2. Yanks stay alive for at lease one more day.
